China warms to greener appliances

China seeks to save 75 terawatt-hours of power annually, the equivalent of 75 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), by promoting energy-efficient air-conditioners, refrigerators and other home appliances, Reuters reported. By subsidising sales, the government aims to increase market shares of such equipment to over 30% by 2012, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing met, if not exceeded, many of its environmental pledges, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Reuters reported. But, said a study released at a UN environmental meeting in Nairobi, China could have done more to work with grassroots groups and to reduce the Games’ total carbon footprint.

Olympic rules "improved air quality"

Emissions regulations succeeded in dramatically reducing air pollution during the Beijing Olympics, reported Science Daily, citing scientists at NASA, the US space agency. Data from NASA satellites, presented at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union, showed a notable reduction in key pollutants over the two-month restriction period.
