艾克森美孚首次投资生物燃料

Exxon making a biofuel investment
The oil giant Exxon Mobil said it will make its first major investment – US$600 million -- in biofuels, joining the California-based biotech company Synthetic Genomics to develop transportation fuels from algae, the Associated Press reported. “This is not going to be easy, and there are no guarantees of success,” said Emil Jacobs, a vice president at Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering Company.

Sahara-Europe solar plan welcomed
A 400-billion-euro (US$560-billion) plan to pump solar energy from the Sahara to Europe has been warmly welcomed, Agence France-Presse reported. The Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII), scheduled for completion in 2050, would see solar-power generators span North Africa and the Middle East to Saudi Arabia, with the electricity generated shared by producer countries and European partners.

Asian bank backs Chinese wind farm
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is helping to finance a pioneering wind farm in Inner Mongolia that will help China to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions and promote private investment in renewable energy, Agence France-Presse reported. The 12-square-kilometre wind farm at Chifeng city is China's first to be built as a joint venture between Chinese and Japanese companies.
