Some of the world's staple crops will be affected by drought and altered rainfall patterns, Oxfam said, and the implications for millions of people could be disastrous.

The findings, the researchers noted, underscore the need for cultivated plant varieties, or cultivars, that are resistant to climate change.

The threat level presented by the virus – officially known as influenza A (H1N1) – was raised to phase 6, the highest level. Phase 6 denotes sustained community-level outbreaks of the disease in more than one WHO region.
