Forum urges vast clean-tech spending
The World Economic Forum says more than US$10 trillion must be invested in clean technology between now and 2030 if the earth is to be spared from an unsustainable increase in temperature, the Guardian reported. At its annual meeting of political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, the organisation said at least US$515 billion should be spent annually on limiting carbon emissions.

Heat scorches southern Australia
Severe heat in southern Australia has left more than 140,000 houses without power and caused transport chaos by buckling railway lines, Reuters reported. "All of this is consistent with climate change, and all of this is consistent with what scientists told us would happen," said the country’s climate-change minister, Penny Wong.

A new survey of California winter snows shows that the most populous American state is facing one of the worst droughts in its history, Reuters reported. Europe seeks global carbon market
The European Commission has called for a global emissions-trading market, despite criticism of its own four-year-old scheme following a slump in carbon prices, the Daily Telegraph reported. The European Union's executive made the call in laying out proposals for a new global pact on climate change, to succeed the Kyoto Protocol.
Caterpillar plague spreads in Africa
A caterpillar plague in Liberia has affected 400,000 people in more than 100 villages in the west African nation so far, the Associated Press reported. The so-called "army worms" -- two to three centimetres in length -- also were continuing their invasion of neighbouring Guinea.

China to subsidise “green” vehicles
In a trial scheme, the Chinese government will subsidise purchases of clean-energy vehicles for public fleets in 13 cities, Reuters reported, citing the Xinhua news agency. The move is designed to help China’s auto industry to develop green technology and to ride out the economic slump.
UN chief warns of rising hunger
The United Nations secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, warned rich nations that they have to do more to prevent the global economic crisis from increasing the number of hungry people in the world, Reuters reported. Nearly one billion people are believed to be under-nourished.

Melting ice threatens penguins
Researchers predict that unless fossil fuels are phased out, there is more than a one-in-three chance that 95% of the world’s best-studied emperor penguin colony in Antarctica will be gone by 2100, New Scientist magazine reported. The colony could be reduced to only a few hundred breeding pairs of the largest penguin species.

Warming “can be affordably managed”
Moving to a “green” global economy could not only protect the earth from the worst effects of climate change but is affordable, according to the environmental organisation WWF. Figures in a new study, Pathways to a Low Carbon Economy, show that global warming can be kept below 2º degree Celsius and that such action is within humanity’s means.
