Turkish government and engineers versus the people

It is sad, that the need for energy and the desire to make maximum use of the hydraulic potential seems to make engineers blind for the human suffering that the flooding of such a large area would cause. No developed country would nowadays accept to sacrifice the livlihood of over 55.000 poeple for power generation. The project is only feasible because people would not be compensated fairly for their losses.
There would be a compromise: 3 smaller dams would produce energy as well and spare most of the agricultural lands and people's homes. But, however, this is not as prestigious for the government and the engineers who appear to follow the dogmatic "only a big dam is a good dam" principle.

[TRANSLATED] There are so many examples of this happening

With the aid of Ilisu dam , the Turkish government hopes to promote the prosperity of local economies and to increase the influence over the Kurdish group. As for the government, the emphasis for the ecological enviroment and the local culture heritage is minute compared to the emphasis on economy. There are far too many examples of this happening in the developing countries.
